The UOC Webmail is the new version of the UOC webmail system.
This enhanced and updated version has followed a UCD approach in order to meet the needs of UOC users, guaranteeing efficient and quick communication among lecturers, students and other UOC staff.
The UOC Webmail follows the OKI/OSID specifications, a standard interface promoted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which allows the Webmail to connect with the main eLearning platforms, such as Moodle, Sakai, Blackboard, etc. In addition, the Webmail has been developed in Java, so it soon will be available to the Internet community as free software.
On the other hand, it incorporates a new feature, the message history, which is not found in most conventional webmails. The message history reflects or records the sending, reading, responding, forwarding and automatic forwarding of emails, as well as the date and time of every action, and it allows lecturers and students to follow their communications, and it is useful to assure the exact moment when learning activities have been sent by students to lecturers, the reception of lecturer’s instructions or indications, etc.
It also has the possibility of scheduling the sending of messages.
The UOC Webmail has been in pilot phase since 2009, and was finally released to all the UOC community in 2012.
The design process and creation of the UOC Webmail is described in the next video:
